5 Ways To Reprogram Your Subconscious Mind
Mar 20, 2024We are going deep in this blog post and by that I mean deep into your subconscious mind.
I know you always hear people talking about how it's possible to can change your mindset with affirmations or journaling and yes those do work - but that’s really just touching on the surface of the inner work that you need to do to rewire your brain.
Our subconscious mind holds onto so much and controls so much of our day-to-day.
I wish I had learned sooner how powerful the subconscious mind is because our subconscious mind keeps us repeating old stories, thoughts, habits and beliefs that might not be serving you.
In this blog, I’m covering…
- What is your subconscious mind?
- The conscious versus the subconscious mind
- Limiting beliefs and your subconscious mind
- 5 ways you can reprogram your subconscious mind
- The connection between mindset coaching and reprogramming your subconscious mind
This is one of my FAVORITE topics to talk about so let’s start learning so you can start doing the work…
What is your Subconscious Mind?
The subconscious mind is part of your mind that operates below the level of conscious awareness.
Imagine an iceberg. You see just the tip of the iceberg above the surface of the water, this is your conscious mind. Below the water is a huge mass of ice, this is your subconscious mind. There is so much more than your eye can see. Your subconscious mind controls 95% of your thoughts, beliefs, habits, and actions. Yup, 95%!
Your subconscious mind is influencing your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors without your conscious awareness or control and it plays a significant role in shaping your perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, and habits.
Your subconscious mind processes information, stores memories, and regulates automatic bodily functions. It's also the source of your intuition, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.
When we talk about doing subconscious work I am referring to the mental processes and activities that occur in the subconscious mind without conscious awareness. These processes can include memory consolidation, emotional processing, problem-solving, and the regulation of bodily functions.
Subconscious work often involves the processing of information and experiences that occur outside of conscious awareness.
For example, when you sleep, your subconscious mind may process and integrate the events of the day, helping you make sense of your experiences and emotions.
Similarly, when you engage in tasks or activities that require focused attention, your subconscious mind may continue to work in the background, processing information and generating insights that can emerge later.
Techniques, such as meditation, visualization, and hypnosis, aim to access and influence the subconscious mind deliberately. These techniques can be used to promote relaxation, enhance creativity, improve problem-solving skills, and facilitate personal growth and development.
Your subconscious is constantly operating and influencing how you move throughout the world - you just don’t realize it - what you’re actively experiencing is your conscious mind which is why we need to talk about…
The Conscious Versus the Subconscious Mind
The conscious mind and the subconscious mind are two components of the mind that operate in different ways…
- Your Conscious Mind:
- The conscious mind refers to the part of the mind that is aware of current thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and experiences.
- It is associated with logical reasoning, decision-making, and focused attention.
- Conscious awareness allows individuals to process information, make deliberate choices, and engage in goal-directed behavior.
- The conscious mind is limited in its capacity and can only focus on a small amount of information at any given moment.
- Conscious thoughts are typically within our control and can be readily accessed and articulated.
- Your Subconscious Mind:
- The subconscious mind operates below the level of conscious awareness and influences thoughts, feelings, and behaviors without our explicit knowledge.
- It is responsible for storing memories, emotions, beliefs, and habits acquired over time.
- The subconscious mind processes information rapidly and can handle a vast amount of data simultaneously.
- It regulates automatic bodily functions, such as breathing and heartbeat, without conscious effort.
- The subconscious mind is associated with intuition, creativity, and automatic responses to stimuli.
- Accessing the subconscious mind often requires techniques such as meditation, hypnosis, or dream analysis.
Have you ever pulled into your driveway and all of a sudden thought, “Woah how did I get here?? I spaced out while I was driving.”
This is because your subconscious mind is so used to the drive that it basically puts your mind on autopilot so that you could think about other things going on in your day to day.
As I mentioned above, 95% of your day is controlled by your subconscious mind, that’s a lot going on behind the scenes. So often people will say, “well that’s just the way I am” or “I can’t change” when in reality you can work with your subconscious mind to show up differently (and better) in your life.
Your subconscious programming runs so deep that most of us don’t even realize how what’s rooted deep within our subconscious is directly affecting our mindset and perceptions of ourselves such as…
Limiting Beliefs and Your Subconscious Mind
We all have limiting beliefs.
This can look like not believing you’re capable of getting a new job, you’re not capable of making positive changes, thinking that you’re not capable of finding a romantic relationship, etc.
Limiting beliefs are deeply ingrained thoughts or convictions that constrain you in some way. These beliefs often originate from past experiences, societal influences, or self-perceptions and can hold you back from achieving your full potential.
And holding on to these limiting beliefs can impact so many various areas of your life, including career advancement, relationships, health, and personal development.
And…
Your limiting beliefs and subconscious mind are connected.
Here's how:
- Formation and Storage: Limiting beliefs often originate from past experiences, societal conditioning, or childhood upbringing. These beliefs can become deeply ingrained in the subconscious mind through repeated reinforcement and emotional attachment. Even if someone consciously disagrees with a limiting belief, it can still persist in their subconscious, influencing their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
- Self-Sabotage: Limiting beliefs can lead to self-sabotaging behaviors that undermine personal growth and success. These behaviors often stem from subconscious programming influenced by limiting beliefs. For instance, someone who believes they don't deserve happiness may unconsciously sabotage relationships or opportunities for happiness because they believe they are unworthy.
- Resistance to Change: The subconscious mind tends to resist change and prefers to maintain familiar patterns, even if they are detrimental. Limiting beliefs act as barriers to change, reinforcing existing thought patterns and behaviors that align with those beliefs. Overcoming limiting beliefs often requires reprogramming the subconscious mind through deliberate and consistent efforts to challenge and replace negative beliefs with more empowering ones.
- Impact on Perception and Reality: Limiting beliefs shape how individuals perceive themselves, others, and the world around them. These perceptions, influenced by the subconscious mind, can create a self-fulfilling prophecy where individuals unconsciously seek evidence to confirm their beliefs, further solidifying them in their subconscious.
If you can learn to recognize and see what your limiting beliefs are then you can move forward with rewiring your subconscious mind so that your limiting beliefs are no longer holding you back!
You can start to notice your limiting beliefs by recognizing where you hold yourself back in your life or where you tell yourself that you can’t do certain things. This is one of the first steps to learning how to change your limiting beliefs.
Now that you understand how your subconscious mind works let’s talk how you can work to reprogram your subconscious mind…

- Behavioral Conditioning: Engage in behaviors and activities that align with your desired beliefs and goals. By consistently taking action in line with your aspirations, you reinforce positive patterns in your subconscious mind.
- NLP aka Natural Language Processing: We use NLP in my 1:1 coaching to identify your limiting beliefs and shifting your limiting beliefs to a more empowering belief.
And remember - you don’t have to try to reprogram your subconscious mind on your own.
It can be hard to pull back all of the layers that go into working on your subconscious mind when you do it on your own. A mindset coach can ask you very specific questions to help you identify where you may need change in your life and then provide the tools for maximum impact.
It wasn’t long ago that I was struggling with my own mindset and finding fulfillment in my life. For a long time I tried to piece together different books, tools, and things that I found online but this only got me so far. It wasn’t until I hired a coach that things really shifted for me.
When working with my clients they each go through a custom program that is for their specific needs and goals in their life.
As life changes and new things come up our plan shifts to make sure that we are addressing all of their needs. Many people don’t realize that we also have memories and emotions that live in the body which is where my coaching differs. We address the mind, give you strategy, and do somatic work to address the body.
Mindset Coaching and Reprogramming Your Subconscious Mind
Mindset coaching can help you reprogram your subconscious mind in several ways:
- Identifying Limiting Beliefs: A mindset coach can help you identify and understand the limiting beliefs that are holding you back. Through deep introspection and questioning, they can uncover subconscious patterns of thinking and behavior that may be undermining your success and happiness. Also you can work through your limiting beliefs by using journal prompts. I encourage you to check out my shadow work journal prompts workbook that teaches you how to challenge your limiting beliefs. You can get the workbook here.
- Challenging Negative Thought Patterns: Once limiting beliefs are identified, a mindset coach can assist you in challenging and reframing them. They provide support and guidance as you question the validity of your negative beliefs and replace them with more empowering and positive ones.
- Creating Positive Affirmations and Visualizations: Mindset coaches help you create personalized affirmations and visualizations that resonate with your goals and aspirations. They assist you in crafting affirmations and visual imagery that effectively communicate your desired outcomes and reinforce new beliefs at a subconscious level.
- Accountability and Support: Mindset coaching provides accountability and support as you work towards reprogramming your subconscious mind. Your coach holds you accountable for taking action, implementing new habits, and staying committed to your growth journey. They offer encouragement, feedback, and guidance to help you navigate challenges and setbacks.
- Customized Strategies and Techniques: Mindset coaches tailor their approach to your individual needs and preferences. They utilize a variety of techniques and strategies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, visualization exercises, meditation, and neuro-linguistic programming, to facilitate subconscious reprogramming based on your unique circumstances.
- Building Confidence and Resilience: Mindset coaching focuses on building confidence, resilience, and self-belief. Coaches help you develop a growth mindset characterized by optimism, perseverance, and a willingness to learn from setbacks. By cultivating a positive and resilient mindset, you become better equipped to overcome challenges and achieve your goals.
